Young Playwrights' Theater inspires young people to realize the power of their own voices.

Help YPT

Each year, Young Playwrights’ Theater provides thousands of DC students with an interactive holistic approach to learning, while giving many of them their only arts programming free of charge. Truancy rates drop. Homework completion soars. Students learn to express their thoughts, dreams and struggles through an interactive writing process.

Recent statistics show that a majority of DC students do not currently read or write at their grade level. Traditional teaching methods do not provide struggling students with the tools necessary to close the learning gap and grow within their unique learning styles. YPT is the only professional theater in DC providing students with an experiential, interactive writing experience in the classroom. We provide a hands-on learning experience that inspires students to think beyond "the test" and realize their potential as individuals and artists.

And YPT continues to raise the bar. Over the past year, we experienced tremendous growth and enhancement of all of our programs, providing hundreds of students with in-depth, high-quality arts learning experiences, taught by DC’s most accomplished artist educators. In 2008, YPT Producing Artistic Director David Snider was thrilled to be invited to help craft the new DCPS Standards for Arts Education, and to write the introduction to the official Theater Standards. These new standards strongly support what YPT has demonstrated in classrooms for the past twelve years: that introducing an interactive process into the classroom deepens student learning across disciplines. And YPT is busy sharing the brilliance of DC students with the rest of the country through high-profile partnerships and co-productions. In March 2008, the Kennedy Center and the White House produced the world premiere of Chasing George Washington: A White House Adventure, an original play written by YPT students in Columbia Heights, showcasing the work of YPT and DC students as a national model for excellence in arts education.

Demand for YPT’s programs is at an all time high and we are poised to serve more DC students than ever before.

But we cannot do it without you. At this critical stage in our growth, we need your support more than ever. Join our cause in the classroom, knowing that you have helped students throughout DC recognize that that their voices count. In these tough economic times, you can be confident that any gift you give to YPT, large or small, will have a big impact on the lives of our students. Your support will guarantee that our valuable programs are here for our students for many years to come.

By giving to the Better Future Fund, you have the power to transform classrooms from the inside out, and Write a Better Future for DC Students.
